Aku kembali! (I’m back!)

Yes, judging by the title, you may conclude that I am in love. Really in love. Falling in love. Head over heels in love~

So how can you express your love in Indonesian?

The most common way would be by saying:

• Aku cinta kamu
• Aku sayang kamu

But there is also, ‘gue sayang ama lo’. Teens love to use ‘gue: me’ and ‘lo: you’. This would be a pretty laid back way to say I love you to someone.

Then there’s ‘Aku sayang banget sama kamu’. The ‘banget’ there helps emphasizes your love. It means, ‘I really love you’.

Not too hard, right? So go on, express your love in Indonesian! I myself am going to send an I love you to my Dutch gentleman now… *Giggles*

I like this website particularly because the man John L. Whiteman, calls himself a bule :P It’s a great website with dictionaries made by the webmaster himself. Unfortunately, this website has been inactive since it’s last website journal on 8 January, 2008.

In most tourist shopping markets, you could bargain the price of goods. If you are not sure whether you could bargain or not, ask the seller:

“Bisakah saya menawar harganya?” (Can I bargain the price?)

You will also need to know the Indonesian currency. Below is the list of money Indonesians use with its picture.

~ This coin has the smallest value. It is a ‘Seratus Rupiah’ coin.

~ This coin is called ‘Dua Ratus Rupiah’.

~ This coin is called ‘Lima Ratus Rupiah’.

 ~  This is a ‘Seribu Rupiah’.

~ This is a ‘Lima Ribu Rupiah’.

~ This is a ‘Sepuluh Ribu Rupiah’.

~ This is a ‘Dua Puluh Ribu Rupiah’.

~ This is a ‘Lima Puluh Ribu Rupiah’.

~ This is a ‘Seratus Ribu Rupiah’.

When you want to ask the price of something, say:

“Berapa harganya?” (How much does it cost?)

When buying clothes or shoes/sandals, and you want a bigger size, say:

“Ada yang lebih besar?” (Is there a bigger size?)

If you want another color of the clothes or shoes/sandals, say:

“Ada warna yang lain?” (Is there another color?)

If you want to ask for a particular item, say:

“Apakah Anda menjual ….?” Change the …. into the item you want.

For example you want sandals, “Apakah Anda menjual sendal?” (Do you sell sandals?)

Other words that you will find useful:

Shoes: Sepatu

Bag: Tas

Purse: Dompet

Necklace: Kalung

Bangles: Gelang

Wrist watch: Jam tangan

Mask: Topeng

This post is a continuation from the first ‘Things That Might Shock You’ post. It is very important for you to understand a few from the very many mistakes, we Indonesian do in the attempt to practice our English :)

This time, it is about Indonesians asking questions like:

1# Where are you going?

I know, you might think, “What a nosy person! Why does he/she want to know?’. Well, Indonesians tend to translate these questions from Indonesian to English. So when an Indonesian ask you a question like that, they mean no harm. It’s a part of daily conversation, where it is actually the same as saying ‘hi’!

2# Where do you live?

I know, this question is very alarming. In Indonesian ‘Where is your house?’ is ‘Dimana kamu tinggal?’ or ‘Tinggal dimana?’ If someone asks me this, I just tell them the name of my area. Not the exact street or house number. Again, it is only a part of daily conversation where the answers does not have to be precise :)

3# Are you married? How many children do you have?

‘How rude!’ would be the first thing in mind, yet, this is as casual as saying ‘how are you?’ to us Indonesian. Don’t answer if you find this upsetting. And if you would like, explain to them how these kind of questions are not appropriate to ask to foreigners.

You might pick up other ‘weird’ questions when you travel at Indonesia put in mind that these questions mean no harm. Really ;)

Gimana kabarmu?

I’m fine, thank you = Saya baik-baik saja, terimakasih

Thank you = Terimakasih / Trims (informal)

You’re welcome = Sama-sama

Do you speak English? = Dapatkah Anda berbahasa Inggris?

How much does it cost? = Berapa harganya?

Please = Tolong

Help = Tolong

Can you please help me? = Dapatkah Anda membantu saya?

What can I help you? = Apa yang dapat saya bantu?

Ada yang bisa saya bantu?
